A kilim is a flat woven textile, traditionally hand woven by tribal women in Central Asia since the eleventh century A.D. The techniques and designs of the kilim weaving tradition are believed to be a legacy of Turkoman tribes of Iran, Afghanistan, and Turkmenistan. Kilims are notable for their rustic texture and restrained palette of primary organic colors. These textiles feature symmetrical motifs in their centers and borders, which reflect influences from Islam. Today these woolen weaves are used in the Subcontinent to craft pillow covers, rugs, wall hangings, bed covers, table linen, and even sofa throws.
