Features
The women who produce these bedspreads by hand look proud and bold. They live near the edge of the Thar desert in India and that is where this kind of application technology looks back on a long tradition. Even in India, these women attract attention due to their special clothing; they don't wear saris but instead wide skirts over slim-fitting trousers. The top garments are very short jackets. Indian women have a strong affinity to jewellery and adorn themselves by wearing a nose ring and earrings as well as putting on as many bracelets as possible. Even their ankles are decorated with a bracelet with tinkling bell attachments. If they produce bedspreads for personal use, these have a rainbow of glowing colours. But we commissioned an elegant colour combination sporting a clean elegant look. Two layers of cotton fabric are used for our bedspread and the matching cushions. The silhouette-like pattern of the white top material is particularly effective against the cream-coloured backing material. It takes a meticulous hand to cleanly cut out the patterns. A high degree of care and patience is called for to fold each open edge cut and attach it stitch by stitch. Slight irregularities cannot be avoided, and sometimes they are even intentional to give liveliness to the surface structure. The simple, cotton velvet cushion blends perfectly with the applique` cushion.
