The highly expressive pattern of the bedspread is strikingly exotic on R'gen's beach. The dyeing technique used for producing it is called batik. Materials of this kind are called Ikat. The artisan's skills for producing textiles of this kind has existed for hundreds of years and probably originated in India. The wax dyeing technique is known throughout Asia, however. This technique involves weaving with yarn which is coated with wax to keep certain parts from absorbing dye and thus produce the desired pattern. In our cotton material, the white circles have been rendered in this manner. A natural result of this procedure is a slightly shimmering transition between the white and blue seen here. This effect is intentional and lends the textiles their characteristic appearance. We certainly hope your interest in batik has been awakened and that you will come to love Ikat materials.
